The Disability Income Insurance (underwritten by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, New York, NY) is available to AFT members who are actively working a minimum of 20 hours per week.  The policy offers you the opportunity to provide for yourself and your family if you become sick or injured and are unable to work.  Becoming disabled takes enough of a toll on you and your family.  This coverage will help ease the burden by offering you valuable income replacement in the event of accidental injury or sickness.

There are two plans to choose from: a 14-day elimination period with a benefit period of two years or a 60-day elimination period with a benefit period of five  years.  Pre-existing conditions are covered after 12 months; pregnancy is covered as any other disability.  Both plans cover up to 60 percent of gross monthly earnings, not to exceed $5,000.  The minimum monthly benefit is $100.  This additional protection will allow you and your family to maintain your current lifestyle if your income is compromised due to illness or injury.  (Please use the link above to view the Product Brochure for additional information on this valuable benefit.)
