The Catastrophic Major Medical Insurance Plan is designed for AFT members and their families to help avoid the financial hardships that accompany major non-job related injuries and sicknesses.

This plan acts as an umbrella which complements your basic health insurance by paying expenses not covered by your primary coverage.

You choose a deductible of either $25,000 or $50,000. The deductible is satisfied from all medical bills incurred (expenses that are paid by your primary insurance, plus any out-of-pocket expenses – e.g. out-of-network charges, deductibles or co-payments) within a 36-month period. After the deductible is satisfied, this plan will begin to pay up to 100% of all eligible reasonable and customary expenses for hospital, medical, surgical or convalescent care, to a maximum of $2,000,000 in benefits, for up to five years, from the date the first expense used to satisfy the deductible is incurred.

With Catastrophic Major Medical Insurance:

  • Coverage is available for the member, his or her lawful spouse/partner and dependent children
  • No medical exam is typically required*
  • Eligible expenses in and out of the hospital are covered
  • Home health-care, convalescent home care and hospice care is covered
  • Medically necessary private duty nursing is covered
  • Prescription drugs are covered
  • Coverage does not terminate because of age

There are many important reasons for you to have this Catastrophic Major Medical Insurance, but they all lead to the same end: This plan will help protect your family and assets.
